Tianjin Port Collaborates with Huawei Technologies Co. Seeking Port Automation

23 January, 2023

One of the world’s largest ports is working to fully automate all port operations, in an attempt to tackle supply chain disruptions and labor shortages caused by the Covid virus.

The robots are already at work picking up and delivering containers at a smart terminal co-built by Huawei that began operations in 2021, and requires only 25% of the human labor needed to manage neighboring docks. The terminal also does not need a driver.

Tianjin Port is working with Huawei Technologies Co. and other companies to address challenges facing the port industry, including how to make supply chains more resilient, said Yang Jiemin, vice president of Tianjin Port Group Co.

Last year, supply disruptions and labor unrest led to congestion in ports around the world and rising shipping prices.
