The International Chamber of Shipping urges governments to set the course for a future Net Zero

26 May, 2023

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), representing the global shipping industry, urges governments of the UN International Maritime Organization (IMO) to take decisive action to achieve a net-zero carbon future.

This organization invites governments to demonstrate greater ambition by establishing a clear direction to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. At ICS they emphasize that having a goal is only the beginning of the journey and that the tools necessary to reach that destination are indispensable.

By the next meeting of the Marine Environment Protection Committee, which will take place in July, the ICS plans to submit detailed proposals supporting the development of a Global Fuel Standard, which will serve as a technical measure to reduce greenhouse gases. emitted by marine fuels. The goal is to reduce greenhouse gases by 5% by 2030.

IMO has already implemented an initial strategy to reduce GHG emissions from shipping, which was published in 2018. This strategy aims to achieve a reduction of at least 50% of the industry’s total GHG emissions by 2050, compared to 2008 levels.

Being that maritime transport is the mode of transport of merchandise with less environmental impact with respect to the amount of merchandise, being that it represents 90% of world trade. This transit of goods contributes 3% to global carbon emissions, which must be urgently addressed so that it can be reduced.

Real-world regulations and meaningful incentives are essential to producing significant amounts of low- or zero-GHG fuels such as methanol, ammonia, hydrogen, sustainable biofuels, and synthetic fuels. This includes the development of new technologies such as carbon capture.
